Bunny-rific Birthday.

My niece is now 2 (which is hard to believe!) I made her birthday cake again this year. Her "security blanket" is her bunny. So I decided to go with a bunny theme. I thought it turned out very well. The cake was vanilla bean with swiss meringue buttercream frosting. I made the bunny and the carrots from fondant and the fence pickets from gumpaste. The dirt is crushed Oreos. She was delighted with it, which totally made it worth the time and effort. I made carrot cake cupcakes for the adults with a little fondant carrot on top of each one. Another successful bbirthday I think!

Shortcut to Candy.

Anyone who has ever melted, colored, and placed candy coating discs into a pastry bag will want these! That process can be quite irritating -- not to mention time-consuming. These will solve the problem. I spied them on Bakerella's site. You can purchase them here in a bunch of colors.

Happy Happy Birthday

Just thought I'd share some (bad) photos of a cake I made for a friend's birthday. It was a layer cake with chocolate and vanilla layers with Strawberry Jam between. It was frosted with buttercream and decorated with royal icing roses.

Cake and more cake

I have been going through our digital photos today, categorizing and printing. I thought I'd share a few from the cake file. The first one I made for my husband's accounting firm on the tax filing deadline day last year. It was complete with edible paper tape and a board covered in 1040 forms. What will I do this year? Hmmmm.
This one was made for my aunt's birthday. Obviously, she is a painter. I made the paint tubes from fondant and the brush from gumpaste.

This one was for my niece's first birthday. She got this little cake all to herself. The rest of us had raspberry jam filled dark chocolate cupcakes.

And this one was for my grandmother's birthday. It is all done in buttercream frosting.

Spring Baking

Honestly, I didn't just make these. I made them last year and just happened to stumble across this photograph today and thought it looked like the perfect Spring idea. I made these for a family reunion of a previous employer. But I think I'm going to have to make 'em again sometime soon!

It's birthday season in our families. Soooooo many cakes to make! This was the first one - January 13 for my Grandmother. I was very short on time and therefore had zero plan for my creation. I decided to wing it and base it mostly on colors that I knew she'd appreciate. I went for pastel pink, blue, yellow, and green. I basically just filled my piping bags and started squiggling it on the blank canvas. I think it turned out pretty well, considering.
